Legal Innovation in Practice – Scaling Judgment Without Losing It: Legal innovation is often framed in terms of new tools and emerging technologies, but much of the impact comes from rethinking how legal work is structured and delivered. Drawing on my experience in workplace investigations at Microsoft, I’ll discuss how teams identify which work can be standardized or automated, where judgment remains critical, and how to design systems that improve efficiency without compromising quality.

Kathy Cho is a Senior Corporate Counsel at Microsoft, where she serves on the Workplace Investigations Team within Compliance & Ethics. She leads investigations involving a wide range of employee concerns, including discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and workplace conduct issues across global contexts. Prior to joining Microsoft, Kathy conducted workplace investigations at Boeing, handling complex employee matters and developing experience in fact-finding, credibility assessments, and investigative decision-making. Kathy began her career as a prosecutor, where she built a foundation in evidence evaluation and investigative strategy. Her current work focuses on ensuring fair, consistent, and defensible investigative processes, while identifying opportunities to improve how legal work is delivered at scale.
